Over Margibi 30 EVD Survivors Commit to Study

first_imgOver 30 Ebola survivors in Margibi County have committed themselves as volunteers for the PREVAIL Natural Ebola History Study that is ongoing at the JFK Medical Center.Speaking at a one-day social mobilization, community engagement and awareness training of communicators, mobilizers and project focal persons’ workshop conducted by the Liberia Crusaders for Peace (LCP) held in Margi County, LCP Administrator Yah Bryant said, the study is intended to help Ebola survivors by examining their many health problems. She said survivors that enroll in the study stand to benefit from free medical examination for any health complication they may face, and will be referred to appropriate medical care centers for treatment.Madam Bryant encouraged survivors to take up the challenge and encourage others to join the study. In an interview with several survivors, some explained their stories in tears.Lawrence Tumbey said, “I got infected on August 5, when I went to work at C. H. Rennie hospital and helped a man who was very sick.“On the 8th of that same month, I fell sick and was taken to an ETU while several people said I was going to die because I reported myself late to the center. I faced hell and lost all hope because 17 of my friends that got infected by the virus died right by me in the room.“I survived but I began to face serious problems with my stomach and now I think the Natural Ebola History Study will find solution for me.”Also telling her story was 57 year-old Jeneva Kennedy, (commonly called in Margibi Nation) who welcomed the PREVAIL study and promised to serve as a volunteer as well as encourage others to join the study.“I worked at C. H. Rennie Hospital as nurse and it was on the 20th of July last year, my colleagues at the hospital called me to carry on a delivery. I quickly rushed to the hospital and delivered a woman without using gloves and not knowing she was Ebola positive and after few days she was confirmed positive and died.“The last week of July I came down with all of the symptoms of Ebola and was sent to the ELWA ETU in Monrovia. So many people discouraged me from going, saying that I would die. But through the grace of God I survived the killer virus, while over 8 persons died in my presence,” Madam Kennedy explained. The Natural Ebola History Study is being carried out at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, while Duport Road Health Center in Paynesville, C. H. Rennie Hospital in Kakata, Margibi County, and Redemption Hospital in New Kru Town will be opening soon to join the study.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
